RELAXING FACIAL MUSCLES
If you’ve heard about Botox, neuromodulators are the same thing. The first one to grace the market in Canada over 30 years ago was Botox. Most people are familiar with it and less familiar with others, like Xeomin and Dysport.
All neuromodulators available in Canada have been rigorously studied and are effective and safe. They are used to reduce wrinkles around the eyes like crow’s feet, laugh and frown lines, the 11, and forehead lines. They also help improve a fatigued look and enhance a youthful appearance day after day; deep sleep, or no sleep.
Other areas where neuromodulators can be used are the neck (necklace lines, bands) and around the mouth (smoker’s lines, gummy smile, downturned mouth), and for reducing grinding and masseter size.
Patients enjoy a rested, more relaxed appearance, for years to come.
- 5-10 minute session
- Lasts 4-7 months
- Used on many areas on and around the face with a cumulative effect, which means more visits lead to less visits because the effects last longer.
- Compliments other treatments such as fillers
Neuromodulators relax the muscles of facial expression by “softening” the tension in these. They have been used in esthetic medicine for many years and have stood the test of time despite vivid examples of some personalities who have misused the product. Less known is the fact that they have also been extensively used in other areas of medicine to relieve migraines, excessive sweating, spasticity, and dystonias.
Neuromodulators work at the junction between nerve and muscle and interact with a protein that stimulates muscle contraction. This requires about 10 days to function and is temporary in effect (usually 4-7 months). Quite often, patients enjoy a cumulative effect once a treatment regimen has been well established, thus requiring lesser amounts in the future, or greater duration of effect. Preventing wrinkles and lines is a popular consideration for many patients. Neuromodulators work well in combination with fillers to optimize overall impact.
The goal with treatment is to “soften” and never to overcorrect any area of the face. In this manner, patients love the natural relaxed, appearance resulting from treatment.
- Forehead

Many male patients are also thrilled with their treatment results. They appear less tired, more refreshed and more youthful, yet completely natural. The effects are subtle but meaningful.
